Winterization of Irrigation Systems: Protect Your Investment This Winter

consumer-choice-2023

Why Winterization Is Essential for Your Irrigation System

Winter in British Columbia may not seem severe, but freezing temperatures can cause extensive damage to irrigation systems. Without proper winterization, your sprinkler system is at risk of freeze damage, leading to costly repairs.

What Is Irrigation Winterization?

Winterization involves preparing your irrigation system for freezing temperatures by removing water from pipes, valves, and sprinkler heads. This process prevents ice formation, which can cause pipes to crack and valves to fail.

In order to ensure that we get to your system before the first cold snap, we ask that you sign up in advance for our Winter Shut-Down Service.

Our Winter Shut-Down Service: A Complete Solution

Our Winter Shut-Down Service ensures your irrigation system is protected before temperatures drop. Here’s what the service includes:

  1. Turning Off the Isolation Valve
We shut off the isolation valve at the main connection to stop water flow into the system.

  2. Blowing Out Water from the System
Using a high-capacity air compressor (185 CFM), we remove water from pipes, valves, and sprinkler heads. This step ensures no water remains to freeze and expand.

  3. Bleeding Solenoid Valves
If we cannot access your panel, our technicians will manually bleed the solenoid valves. Make sure your controller is set to the OFF or RAIN position for the winter.

  4. Surge Protector Installation and Maintenance
A surge protector is highly recommended to shield your system from power surges and outages. If the protector is blinking, it has been compromised and needs replacement.

When to Winterize Your Irrigation System

We begin winterization services in the last week of September and continue through the winter season. Scheduling early ensures your system is prepared before the first cold snap.
