Metro Vancouver homeowners as well as businesses will be restricted more than ever when it comes to watering their lawns. Under new regulations, both residents and commercial properties will be limited to watering their lawn only one day a week. Last year we saw a record-breaking heat wave along with higher than normal water use. Both of these factors play into the call to moderate water use for 2022. Here is the new regulations:
Residential
• Even-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns 5 a.m. – 7 a.m. Saturday.
• Odd-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns 6 a.m. – 9 a.m. Sunday.
Note: Watering trees, shrubs and flowers is permitted any day from 5 am to 9 am if using a sprinkler, or any time if hand watering or using drip irrigation. All hoses must have an automatic shut-off device.
Edible plants are exempt from regulations
Non-Residential
• Even-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns 4 a.m. – 6 a.m. Monday.
• Odd-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns 6 a.m. – 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Note: Watering trees, shrubs and flowers is permitted any day from 4 am to 9 am if using a sprinkler, or any time if hand watering or using drip irrigation. All hoses must have an automatic shut-off device.
Edible plants are exempt from regulations
Is there enough time to water?
The new regulations definitely pose a challenge, especially for larger properties with several lawn zones. Able Irrigation will be working hard this year to maximize the allotted time to get the most out of the limited watering window. There are several things we can look at to help make your existing irrigation system more efficient.
- A proper irrigation design with head to head coverage will reduce run times for each zone while giving your turf the water it needs
- Using the right products with the right nozzles will help to tighten up your watering schedule
- Irrigation controller fine tuning. Often run times are longer than they need to be. Our certified technicians will cut back where overwatering is occurring.
